Free Summer activities in Haverhill announced as part of the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme

Soft play and activities at The Zone, sports camps and swimming are among the free activities taking place in Haverhill during the school summer holidays.

They are part of the national Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme which is primarily aimed to support children who receive benefits related free school meals. It was set up to help support them during the school holidays when they may not otherwise get a hot meal.

But discretionary places are also available to other families who could do with a little bit of extra support at this time.

The Summer holiday programme of activities is Government funded and has been coordinated by West Suffolk Council on behalf of Suffolk County Council.

Families with children on benefits related free school meals should have already received information through their school or college about HAF. Booking is through an online platform called Eequ at Search learning experiences · Eequ which details all the HAF activities across Suffolk. Schools have also been given information to help any parents who cannot access online to book. If transport is an issue, Suffolk County Council may be able to help – families are asked to contact HAFenquiries@suffolk.gov.uk

Other families should contact the activity providers to ask about discretionary places. Contact details can be seen on the same Eequ link or through the council’s #westsuffolksummerhaf26 posts on Facebook and Instagram. Discretionary places are limited and will be decided by Suffolk County Council on a first come first served basis.

How do I qualify / sign up?

HAF is a national programme funded by the Department for Education and coordinated locally by West Suffolk Council on behalf of Suffolk County Council.

It is primarily targeted at children or young people who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals. Activities are free and sessions include a healthy meal and snacks. Eligible families should have already received information through their school or college about HAF in their area.

There are discretionary free places available to families with children or young people who don’t receive benefits-related free school meals, but who are struggling with the cost-of-living and suffering financial hardship, or who would otherwise be ineligible for HAF. These discretionary places are limited and will be decided by Suffolk County Council on a first come first served basis.

Suffolk Country Council Job – School Crossing Patrol

Suffolk County Council are looking for a School Crossing Patrol to work on Crowlands Rd, in Haverhill.

Hours of work: 8:15am to 8:55am and 3:10pm to 3:45pm

Monday to Friday term time only, part time.

(6.25 hours per week)

£13.05 per hour (*pay award pending, and includes half pay retainer during school holidays, & holiday allowance.)

You will deliver a valuable service to the local community by providing safe passage to pedestrians who cross the road at this designated point.

You will need to:

be confident, happy and welcoming to all pedestrians and road users
be able to decide on the safest way to stop traffic and the best points in time at which to cross.

If you are friendly, outgoing and available during school term times only, then this could be the job for you.

Let’s Talk Volunteering – Haverhill

West Suffolk Council, working with Community Action Suffolk, are inviting VCFSE (Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise) organisations to attend a Let’s Talk Volunteer network event in Haverhill on Wednesday 15 July at Haverhill Learning Centre.

Places are fully funded for VCFSE organisations, delivering organisational support within West Suffolk, and will offer guided network opportunities that encourage:

– Open discussions and sharing of real-life volunteer management experiences

– Building connections with other local organisations, creating opportunities for collaboration, shared solutions and joint working

– Exploring practical approaches to strengthening volunteer journeys

Discussions will focus on operational issues such as:

– Recruitment and retention

– Benefits of partnership working

– Free use of Volunteer Suffolk to advertise and manage volunteers (short demo included)

Please note, the 90 minute long network event is open to a maximum of 20 attendees on a first come first serve basis, with one place available per organisation per event.

Join The Offshoot Foundation for a series of FREE filmmaking workshops this August

The Offshoot Foundation is hitting the road again this summer, bringing filmmaking workshops to young people (11-18 year olds) across West Suffolk, including Haverhill.

During the summer holidays, the team will be spending three days at the Chalkstone Community Centre (CB9 0JB):

Monday 17 August | 10am – 3pm
Tuesday 18 August | 10am – 3pm
Wednesday 19 August | 10am – 3pm

These FREE filmmaking sessions will teach you hands-on filmmaking skills from professional filmmakers while creating exciting projects in a fun and supportive environment.

Whether you’re completely new to filmmaking or already have some experience, everyone is welcome.

What you will learn

Participants will explore filmmaking through a variety of creative projects, including:

Movie trailers
Music videos
Animation using professional filmmaking equipment

You'll also have the opportunity to develop skills in:

Camera operation
Video editing
Acting and performance Storytelling
Teamwork and communication
Creative problem-solving

Prefer to stay behind the camera? That's absolutely fine!

There are plenty of production roles available, and no one is required to appear on screen.

Age Range: 11–18 years

Places Available: Maximum of 20 participants per workshop

Each workshop creates something different, so participants are welcome to attend as many or as few sessions as they wish.

A lunch break will be provided during the day.

Eastern Education Group are offering people the chance to try their construction plant simulator to help give people a unique insight into working in construction.

On Tuesday 18 August (11:00am – 2:00pm) on Haverhill High Street (outside Peacocks) the van will offer an exciting, hands-on introduction to the world of modern plant operation.

At the heart of the experience is a state-of-the-art operator simulator, giving you the chance to step into the role of a plant operator and explore cutting-edge technology used across today’s construction and engineering sectors.

The highlight is the opportunity to sit in a realistic operator environment and test your skills in a safe, immersive setting. This interactive experience opens your eyes to the future of plant operation, where digital tools, precision controls and advanced simulation shape how the industry works.

By engaging with the simulator Easter Education Group aims to:

Doorstep Crime & Scam Awareness Training

Haverhill Town Council would like to invite you to a free-to-attend doorstep crime and scam awareness training session on Monday 22 June at 6:30pm.

Hosted at Haverhill Arts Centre, the 90-minute session will be presented and run by Crime Reduction Enterprise.

What will the session cover?

The 90-minute long session will cover all areas of fraud, including:

• Internet/cyber crime
• Mass marketing fraud (including mail and telephone fraud)
• Romance and courier fraud
• Social media data harvesting
• A.I. crime
• Doorstep crime (including bogus officials, distraction burglary, criminal/rogue traders

The session will explore how criminals are using advanced technology which can be used to target you, your family, your community group’s members, schools and businesses.

What will I gain from the session?

Alongside giving real-life examples of these crime areas, the session will advise you on how you can keep safe with some simple to follow rules and practical advice.

Who are Crime Reduction Enterprise?

Crime Reduction Enterprise have been operating since 2012 and have worked with police and trading standards officers across the UK to help raise awareness and keep people safe from fraud and doorstep crime criminals.

The group has delivered to health and social care workers in private and public sector, safeguarding teams within both police and council organisations, community nurses, church groups, W.I’s, over 55’s meetings and county care organisations.

Struggling to pay energy bills?

West Suffolk Council are offering a FREE Energy Advice Survey to homeowners, private renters and landlords.

What is retrofitting and why is it important?

Retrofitting is when a measure is installed to an existing building that will help improve its energy efficiency. It can help tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions and fuel poverty by lessening the use of heating systems.

Is there an eligibility criteria for this survey?

This survey is for homeowners, private renters and landlords. You do not need to be earning a specified salary for this survey.

What will happen after the survey?

A follow up letter or email will be sent within five working days after the completed survey with the list of:

Energy efficient measures recommended to you
The energy grants and schemes you may be eligible for
Any further assistance that you have been signposted to
Behaviour changes that could improve your energy efficiency
The Healthy Homes Advisor’s contact details.

What will you receive during the survey?

The Energy Advice Survey will help you:

Gain knowledge on your energy efficiency and where potential heat loss is occurring.
Talk through which energy efficiency measures are right for your home.
Discuss energy grants and schemes that you could be eligible for.
Change behaviour to help improve energy efficiency and reduce heat loss.
Be referred to other organisations for further help if needed.

Who will be conducting the survey?

West Suffolk Council's Healthy Homes Advisor at West Suffolk Council, Jessica Warn, will be conducting the survey.

Jessica specialises in domestic home energy and has completed her Energy Awareness and Retrofit training. Her role is to help residents find ways of improving their home energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

This survey will only be conducted by a staff member at West Suffolk Council. With your consent, West Suffolk Council may pass your information to other organisations for further assistance.
