Haverhill’s annual Halloween celebration is back, but with a twist…

This year on Saturday 31 October (running from 2pm to 5pm) we are delighted to be hosting a brand new Halloween event in the town centre, making it even easier for people to join in the fun and celebrate all things spooky.

This free-to-attend event is for families with children aged 3-12 and will feature a spooky scavenger hunt across Haverhill Town Centre, featuring plenty of scary sights and interactive monsters along the way, as well as short performances on the Market Square (times TBC).

There will also be a family-friendly Halloween party taking place at Haverhill Arts Centre at 3pm, 4pm and 5pm for just £1.50 per child (adults free).

A campaign in West Suffolk to get households to claim their Pension Credit has already boosted the income of over 25 households on average by over £3,600 a year.

Now West Suffolk Council’s Financial Inclusion Service is writing to more households that it has identified as likely to be eligible for unclaimed Pension Credit.

Nationally, it is estimated by the Government that £1.5 billion in Pension Credit went unclaimed in 2023. Households that successfully apply for Pension Credit, may then be eligible for further help to boost their income.

Cllr Donna Higgins, Cabinet Member for Families and Communities at West Suffolk Council, said: “We want our communities across West Suffolk to thrive. This income, together with the other benefits it can unlock, can make a huge difference to whether a household is thriving or simply surviving.

“People can claim Pension Credit even if they have other income, savings or own their own home. It is separate from their State Pension and is based on their age and income.

“By claiming their full Pension Credit, households may also get other benefits such as help with housing and council tax, a free TV licence, help with heating costs and more.

“We are writing directly to households that we have identified as likely to be eligible for unclaimed Pension Credit, but you don’t need to wait for a letter to make a claim.”

Residents that don’t receive a letter can still enquire about Pension Credit at www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility or by phoning West Suffolk Council’s Financial Inclusion Service on 01284 757660.

Any resident who receives a letter and wants to check that it is genuine, can do so by contacting the Council’s customer services team.

Haverhill Town Council and The Befriending Scheme unveil ambitious new plans for a new inclusive community campus

Haverhill Town Council and The Befriending Scheme have unveiled ambitious new plans for a new inclusive community campus on the former Castle Hill Middle School site.

The community campus will be centred around a care farm, operated in partnership with The Befriending Scheme, which will offer opportunities for people with learning disabilities, or those struggling with their mental health, to engage with animals, horticulture and the natural environment. Whilst the care farm will be used for therapeutic purposes during the week, it is envisaged that at weekends families will be able to bring their children to see the animals as part of the overall site experience.

Alongside the care farm, Haverhill Town Council’s plans include a large youth hub which will feature a music studio, youth club, work barn for construction skills and an alternative education provision.

For the community there will be a new community centre to serve West Haverhill, plus a café and soft play centre (relocated from its current location at The Zone on Sturmer Road).

Shirley Moore, CEO of The Befriending Scheme, said: “Opening a care farm in Haverhill has been part of our development plans for over five years. We are delighted to now be working alongside Haverhill Town Council on such a truly exciting and unique project that would make a significant difference to the Haverhill community.”

Colin Poole, Haverhill Town Clerk, explained that this project is the council’s ambition which has been developing over the last 12 months.

He said: “There is still a long way to go to make this a reality, but now is the time to engage the public as this facility will ultimately belong to them.”

A consultation is taking place at St Felix School in Haverhill from 5pm until 7pm on Tuesday 29 September.  There will be a chance to see the draft plans and speak to the architects and councillors, as well as service providers who would be delivering services within the site.

West Suffolk Council’s Cabinet member for Planning has welcomed a public consultation on plans for a new school and community facility in Haverhill.

A new 210 place primary school and 30 place pre school have been proposed by Suffolk County Council on land near Ann Suckling Road, along with a new community facility.

The plans have come forward after West Suffolk Council secured section 106 developer funds as part of the planning permission for the Haverhill North West scheme.

Cllr Frank Stennett, Cabinet Member for Planning at West Suffolk Council said: “We’re delighted to see proposals come forward for public consultation about the delivery of both for a new school and community facility.

“We are pleased to be working with both the county council and the town council on this and we look forward to this progress over the months ahead.”

Suffolk County Council is holding a drop in event in Haverhill Arts Centre on Wednesday (23 September) from 3.30pm to 6.30pm.
