Westfield Primary Academy pupils and Haverhill Town Council representatives have taken part in a litter pick to raise awareness about the impacts littering has on a community.

Toby Gooch, deputy headteacher at Westfield Primary Academy, alongside Haverhill deputy town clerk, Vicky Phillips, organised the litter pick (which took place on Wednesday 16 October) to educate pupils on having respect for the environment, and to promote a sense of pride in the area. The litter was collected around the Chalkstone Estate and in the areas near Samuel Ward Academy.

Using the litter collected during the pick, pupils are hoping to create some artwork which will be put on display to raise awareness against littering.

Also in attendance at the litter pick was Haverhill Mayor, David Smith, Deputy Mayor, Quinn Cox and ward councillors, Pat Hanlon and Lora Miller-Jones.

David Smith said: “I was extremely pleased to join pupils from Westfield Primary Academy for their litter pick in the streets around their school.

“It was heartening to hear how aware these young people are of the detrimental effects that littering has on the environment. They could certainly teach us grownups ups a thing or two.”
