Remembrance Day

Sunday 14 November

Remembrance Day and Armistice Day 2021 in Haverhill

Haverhill Town Council is planning to mark Remembrance on Sunday 14 November in several ways. At 10.15am a parade will leave the Arts Centre car park and make its way to the War Memorial at Haverhill Cemetery on Withersfield Road. The parade will be led by a marching band and followed by representatives of the Haverhill branch of The Royal British Legion, faith leaders, armed forces & emergency cadets, scouts and guides.  Civic representatives such as Liz Smith, Mayor of Haverhill, and other town councillors, will join the parade on Market Square, as can other serving military personnel and veterans.  The procession will arrive at the cemetery for approximately 10.45pm. The 11.00am service will be led by the Rev Max Drinkwater of St Mary’s Church and Father John from St Felix’s Church. It will also feature a rendition of The Last Post and Reveille courtesy of Tim Pannell from Haverhill Silver Band. Those who are unable to make it to the cemetery will be able to mark their respects by watching a live stream of the ceremony via the Haverhill Town Council YouTube channel. Check social media links nearer the time for the link.

Councillor John Burns said

“Remembrance Day 2020 obviously presented us with a few unusual challenges. Never-the-less Haverhill Town Council was determined to go ahead with the commemorations and so we made the decision to livestream the event. It proved so popular we are more than happy to make the same arrangements this year. We hope it will allow as many members of the community as possible the chance to pay their respects.”

On Armistice Day (Thursday 11th November) the Union flag will be raised on the Market Square along with the flags of The Royal British Legion and Haverhill Town Council. The Royal British Legion will hold a short service, with a one-minute silence, on the High Street in front of St Mary’s Church at 11.00am. All are welcome.

St Mary’s Churchyard, and parts of the High Street, will again be decorated with knitted and crafted poppies donated by the community. The Royal British Legion will decorate the windows of the church with poppies that remember those from Haverhill who lost their lives in conflict. For the churchyard, Ellis Interiors and The Craft Basket have joined forces to create a giant wreath decorated with more poppies and a silhouette of the lost soldier.

Liz Smith, the Mayor of Haverhill said.

“I’m proud to live in and represent a town where the community is so willing to come together on important occasions like this”.

“We ask for those members of the public, who wish to join us, to arrive approximately 15 minutes early and preferably make their entrance via Broadcroft Crescent”.

“If serving military personnel, or service veterans from any conflict, wish to join the parade or the ceremony please email remembrance@haverhill-tc.gov.uk with contact details.”

I would like to take this opportunity to say on behalf of Haverhill  ‘Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them’. “

If you can’t make The Haverhill Remembrance Day Service in person, you can pay your respects by joining the service online: https://fb.me/e/33F4Wo3rS
You will be able to watch from 10.40am on Sunday 14 November.
