D-Day 80th Anniversary
Mayor of Haverhill, Councillor David Smith, will be hosting a short Service of Commemoration on the Market Square at 11.00am.
This will be followed by a flag raising, after which The Lamp Light of Peace will be lit and taken into St Mary’s Church – The service will be led by the Revd. Max Drinkwater of St Mary’s Church. It will include a proclamation, which has been written by Pageant Master of D-Day 80, Bruno Peek CVO OBE OPR.
The proclamation will be followed by an act of remembrance, including a performance of the Last Post by Archie Pannell, 11, on the Market Square.
To conclude the day at 6:30pm, the six bells of St Mary’s Church will be rung.
Local heroes who fought on D-Day will also be remembered throughout the day on banners hung along the High Street.
Each banner will include an image of a D-Day veteran who has a connection to Haverhill as well as information on which regiment they served in.
