What’s it all about?

The Great British Spring Clean is back for 2025 and takes place from 21 March – 6 April, 2025.

During the campaign members of the great British public are encouraged to come together as a network of #LitterHeroes to tidy up the places that we love.

Last year, people up and down the country pledged to clean up more than 425,000 bags of litter, collecting and recycling harmful rubbish from our streets, parks, beaches, and other public spaces.

It’s a landmark year for Keep Britain Tidy as they are marking their tenth Great British Spring Clean, so we’d love you to help us to beat that total!

This year, the message is simple – we want to encourage pride in communities during the Great British Spring Clean and beyond.

Last year, 74% of participants who completed the post-campaign survey told the Great British Spring Clean that they would encourage other people they know or meet to litter-pick.

How can I take part?

Whether it's coming together with our communities to improve the environment on our doorstep, or arranging a group clean to get your neighbourhood involved, the Great British Spring Clean is all about taking pride in the places we love.

See the two group litter picks above which have been organised by Keep Haverhill Tidy.

Ideas of what you can do:

  • Pick up some litter down your street or around your house
  • Organise a group litter pick in your area
  • Pick up some litter on your favourite walk
  • Make sure to dispose of your own litter in the correct way
  • Encourage those you know to dispose of their litter correctly

Make some noise around your participation in this year's #GBSpringClean. It's an amazing opportunity to let the world know about the great work you are doing to improve the environment on their doorstep.

We would love for you to share all the exciting things happening during the campaign using the #GBSpringClean #LitterHeroes and #LoveWhereYouLive hashtags.

Why is the Great British Spring Clean so important?

This year we are spreading the word that the environment belongs to everyone! Since the launch of the campaign, millions of #LitterHeroes from communities, faith groups, schools, businesses and local authorities have united to help tackle litter – we all have a role to play.

Many volunteers regularly find ‘retro rubbish’ that was dropped many years ago but is still causing harm to our environment today, releasing greenhouse gases as it slowly breaks down in our soil and water, which contributes to the climate crisis.

Litter-picking is a simple action that anyone can do to make an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we live, work and play. In fact 97% of people surveyed after 2024's campaign agreed they felt they had made a difference to their local area, and 86% said they felt part of a national movement that is taking action to tackle litter.

It's not just humans who are impacted by litter. The RSPCA received around 13,000 calls over the last four years about animals that are caught up in or injured by litter. By removing materials that don’t belong from their natural habitats, we protect wildlife and marine life, as well as our domestic pets.

What is Haverhill Town Council doing to help?

This year, Haverhill Town Council will be encouraging people and local organisations to help clear the town of litter and raising awareness of the impact litter can have on the community and local wildlife.

Local groups, businesses and schools have been contacted to encourage them to take part in litter picks, with the equipment being provided by the town council and organising rubbish collections.

The Town Council are able to lend out litter pickers and bag hoops, provide black bags and help organise the collection of the litter bags.
